VIIIth FRANCISCO COELLO
INTERNATIONAL AWARD

For students projects on cartographic engineering and related sciences.

 

     

 

In honour of Francisco Coello de Portugal y Quesada, a prolific cartographer and instigator of the modern cartography in Spain, the Vice President for Extracurricular Activities and the Polytechnic University College of the University of Jaén is proud to announce the eighth edition of "The Francisco Coello International Award for Degree and Master Thesis Projects in the study of Cartographic Engineering and Related Sciences", with the following conditions of entry for applicants:

APPLICANTS

This competition is open to candidates from the whole University community. Students from Technical Colleges may apply if they have submitted their student project, after 2004, on one of the following subjects: Cartography, Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Cadastral Surveying and Mapping, Geographical Information Systems, Remote Sensing, Land Planning, Surveying and Mapping Tools and Techniques, etc.

 

SUBMISSIONS

·The project submitted must be the same as the one used by the applicant to be awarded his/her degree.
·In the instance where the original document were not written in Spanish, the applicant should fill in the form found on the web page in Spanish [form].
·The document should be presented in written form, in DIN-A4 paper format, and any graphic information should be presented to an adequate scale and in a separate annex.
·Candidates applying from outside Spain may submit their documents in pdf format and send them in soft copy (CD or DVD), together with a certificate of authenticity issued from the university department in which it was originally presented.
·The document presented may show the author's name, where he/she is from, tutorship, college or any other explanatory data which appears on the original work.

 

AWARDS

·There are two different competitions: In the first, those candidates who have submitted projects which have led them to being awarded a University Diploma* may apply and the second is for those applicants whose projects have led to them being awarded a University Bachelor's Degree-Master's Degree**.
·In both cases, the award money offered has been set at 1000 euros. Together with this, the successful applicants will receive material and equipment granted by the different sponsors of this competition including: bibliography, computer based tools and mapmaking software ceded by these sponsors.
·The panel of judges may decide to concede any of these two awards to more than one applicant, in which case, the award will be shared by the winners.
·The prize will be awarded to the projects, regardless of the number of authors that have participated in their elaboration.
·A certificate will be issued to the supervisors-tutors of the award-winning projects in acknowledgement of their work.

*University Diploma level is equivalent to a 3 year University course or 180 credits according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
**Bachelor's Degree-Master's Degree level is equivalent to a 4-5 year University course or 240-300 credits according to the ECTS.

 

CERTIFICATES

All applicants will receive a certificate for having participated in the competition.


DEADLINE FOR ADMISSION

The deadline for the presentation of the candidates' projects will be 17th April 2007 at 14:00 hours.

 

PANEL OF JUDGES

The panel of judges will be composed of University lecturers and professionals of renowned prestige related to the subjects being judged.


DECISION

The result of the competition will be publicly announced on 27th April 2007.
The prizes will be awarded on 10th May 2007 at the University of Jaén.
There is no right to appeal against the final decision reached by the judges.


PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW

·All candidates who fulfil the requirements of the competition will be allowed to take part by sending their projects to the address given below.
·Those projects which have received awards in previous editions of this competition are not eligible to participate.
·The projects should be sent in a sealed envelope in which all the applicants should also enclose full information about the their personal data (name, address, telephone number, email address and a copy of their identity card or passport) and an attested photocopy of their degree certificate, or, failing this, an attested receipt of having applied for its issue.
·Once the judges have met to evaluate the projects and the minutes have been taken of these meetings, the result will be announced on the University of Jaén web page and the winners will be notified and invited to the public award ceremony.
·All the original projects will be used to increase the library collection of the Polytechnic University College of Jaén.
·By participating in this competition the candidate demonstrates that he/she accepts the conditions of entry.
·The "Agencia MRW" will be responsible for the transport (within Spain) of the students projects which participate in this competition, with no extra charge to the candidates. Subsequently, the latter should contact this agency either by phone 902 300 400 or through their web page www.mrw.es.
